The week in public sector IT: the biggest tenders and awards (19/02)

This is the third instalment of a new feature analysing the biggest public sector IT deals from the previous week. In partnership with data analysis firm Tussell, we drill down into the top ten most valuable tenders and awards, and take stock of which tech firms have won the biggest share of the public sector pie.

The biggest tender of the week comes from Manchester City Council, which is looking for a new “telephony system” – an alternative term for “voice over Internet Protocol”. (VoIP services let people host phone calls over the internet.) The council’s existing telephony system becomes end of life in 2019. It’s now looking for a partner that can provide the system via a Software as a Service model as part of its new “cloud first” ICT strategy. Firms have until 15 March to apply.

Outsourcing giant Capita, which issued a profit warning last month, is both the biggest supplier of the week and the winner of the largest deal. It was revealed that in December Transport for London had contracted the firm to provide a core wide area network over five years. A WAN is generally defined as a computer network with a radius of more than 1km. The deal is worth almost £110m.
