Royal Mail starts Big Data building blocks

The Royal Mail has started its move into the world of Big Data in earnest with the adoption of analytics tool Hortonworks Hadoop platform, according to a report in Computerworld UK.

The report pays particular attention to the fact that the organisation is taking a steady approach to Big Data and analytics rather than aiming for some sort of big bang.

We’re not all that surprised personally; if all post office employees have to sign the official secrets act because they (obviously) deal with personal addresses and items going to them every day, then an approach that said, “Hey, we have all this data, let’s exploit it” would probably not have sent out the right messages.

So it’s going to be a softly softly approach for the foreseeable future – and no worse for that. New Statesman Tech will continue to report developments as they happen.
